These Prim-style dolls are made with decoupaged sheet music over old thread cones from a closed mill. Their heads are hand-sculpted and feature hand-painted details; their arms are vintage bias binding wrapped around wire and painted. Wool, fabric flowers, vintage laces, seam binding and other reused objects are used to embellish the dolls, each of which stands around a foot tall.

A retro romantic birdcage veil for a special day! The blossoms have satin petals with organza accents and pearlized glass bead center embellishments.

Lots of making, not very much posting; big changes are on the way as I move into a new studio space! The larger area will feature an area just for display and bridal consultations, along with a workspace. First Friday in May will have a special event featuring local artists against Amendment 1, with pieces focusing on the freedom of love.

Can’t wait to see what fresh delights and classic wonders will be presented this year. So many speaker, exhibits, openings and events — no idea where to begin!

The bright, unseasonably warm day has turned overcast with just enough glow at the edge of the clouds to illuminate what’s left of the colourful splendor adorning the trees. It’s the kind of day where I feel perfectly justified in sitting by the window with a cup of coffee and watching the leaves fall.

She’s almost finished now! Her face and hair are detailed in acrylic paint with a paint wash applied to her arms and hands. Her lacy shoulder wrap is made of vintage trim aged with a walnut crystal stain; similar trim will edge her dress when she’s complete.

Chiaroscuro;black, white and shades of grey make for a fashionable fascinator. This piece in progress is made of a large flower of layered buckram petals, a black sinamay base with a comb back and grey goose biots.

Here she is with her ‘dress’ mostly completed and her arms draped pending final construction. She will also have trim made of vintage lace and wings made out of buckram; those have had an aging dye applied and are currently drying. Her arms have been fashioned out of cotton-covered wire wrapped in vintage bias trim. After the gesso on the sheet music has dried, her face and neck will be painted and her hair applied.

Looking much larger in the photo, this doll’s head is only about the size of a golf ball! She’s made out of paper clay, a wooden dowel and a cardboard cone; once the clay is dry, her face will be sanded and painted and wool roving hair will be applied. The cone ‘dress’ will be embellished with old paper, a buckram collar and vintage lace trim, then the end of the dowel will be set in a wooden block so she can be displayed.

The completed clip made with the buckram/vintage sheet music ‘fabric’. Sewable, flexible, fun!
